    The original Limits of Humanity:

Is there a border we will never cross? Are there places we will never reach, no matter how hard we try? It turns out, there are. Even with sci-fi technology, we are trapped in a limited pocket of the Universe and the finite stuff within it. How much universe is there for us and how far can we go?

    1. Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

Hey Everybody! So this video is a remake and remaster of an older video that has a mistake in it. You can watch the original here: What is the mistake? In a nutshell: In the original video we said that it was PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the local group and reach other galaxy groups. That the rest of the universe is moving away from us too fast to catch up. But that’s wrong. It is not PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the Local Group, just extremely unlikely that we’ll ever do it. BUT: If you have a lot of time and a fast spaceship you can still get to a limited amount of galaxies - these galaxies will eventually get out of reach forever but until then, they are technically within reach. So why did we keep the video up and didn’t purge it when we deleted our addiction and refugee crisis videos? Well, it has to do with the nature and severity of the mistake: We did talk to a few astrophysicists to ask them what they thought and if we should take down the video. Their feedback was pretty clear, they thought it was still fine as the universe expansion things explained in the video are correct and they didn’t consider the local group thing as too major. This was actually a case of “good enough”. Also, back when this original upload happened, Kurzgesagt was operating at pretty tight margins and just redoing a video was not easy for us. Back then the team was small and we were fighting to put new videos out. So we just swallowed the bitter pill and kept the video around. But the video still bothered us, as far as we know this was the biggest unfixed mistake on the channel. Super frustrating, especially because the core idea of the video is so fascinating. The limit of our species. The actual limit. So yeah, we finally remade the video, sorry for taking this long, life got in the way. The original video will stay up, you can compare the two if you want to see how far we have come in a few years in terms of production quality. All in all, we could only grow the channel and work on getting better because of direct support from you guys. So thank you for that. - Philipp PS: If you want, check out our shop for some new posters about the universe posters and black hole plushies and stuff like that:

This gave me a scary thought.... what if the galaxy we are in and why there isnt alien activity or federation to meet is simply that we possibly are in such a young galaxy and being so far in the edge of it we are truely alone.

If we look at space through the eyes of science? We will never understand the meanings and true origins. We are all source beings that were all created at the beginning, and we have have live countless lives. You are connected to everything in the universe and soon enough those who recognize their true nature will be able to connect with all of the beings in the universes. How? We are already connected, we are all one. Look at the spiritual side of the universe. It may lead you into a place of better understanding and less speculation by ‘science.’ Just a thought Love to all❤️

So. I have a thought, now. Say we were able to open a wormhole to somewhere without first reaching the destination. Would that allow us to pass this border? I know it's totally theoretical, but just grasping at straws to comfort myself! Also, would that give us a window into the current state of whatever destination, as opposed to the millions of years old light that reaches us late?

    13. Kenneth Bergan

I disagree with this. First off, although it may accelerate the speed at which a galaxy travels away from us when "exiting" the zone, that doesn't mean we also won't increase acceleration when we one day in the future travel on that very same path. Also, future technology may be uncomprehensible today, so the word "never" is completely inappropriate and should be avoided entirely.

Something so warm and fuzzy about the fact that the universe is so crazy, unpredictable, and mysterious, yet we exist and we're able to have these little complex lives. I'm not religious but there's something big way beyond our understanding working to make things come together in a way that just works out for us to exist and I think that's so fucking cool.

Why did the universe expanding so fast and is going faster. Well there are countless ideas as to why, Here is mine. When the universe started it was a big bang. However, when that big bang happened there were a number of problems that occurred. One was that it was going so fast when the big bang happened that the space of time could not keep up with it. So now that the universe expanded faster than it should have, it got sling shot into a continuous motion of expanding. However because there is no limit to how much it could expand, it started going faster cause well, Since there is no limit to how much it can expand, it thought why should I expand at a fixed rate and started to speed up and because it keeps speeding up, that speed is essentially grabbing itself and slinging the expansion faster and faster and the cycle rinses and repeats. This is a stupid thing I wrote however this was a thought that I had ever since I started learning about space. also I'm 16 so please don't hurt me to much k. also wrote this in like 5 minutes so ye.

      1. Linkzpulse

    35. Cooper Biggers

I understand the fact that everything is being pulled to the galactic horizon because the universe is still expanding due to the big bang (right?) and our local group is one of those dense pockets so we and other dense pockets of stars and stuff are being pulled slower but if there EVER POSSIBLY is a star born that becomes a planet and life is formed won't we be past the horizon by then and they they never knew that us humans ever existed? I also wonder what is past the horizon and once we get there or if we even get there at all. Sorry for this comment, so many questions about the end of everything.

I do not agree with this video in any way shape or form. You're trying to comprehend something incomprehensible or are you guys just hypocrites? The Kardashev scale dictates that there could be civilizations on an omega level. Meaning that reaching other galaxies could be possible but we as humans couldn't comprehend how that would be accomplished so by trying to state that humans have a "limit" you're automatically saying that level 2, 3 and higher beings can't exist.

      2. Mihajlo Sreckovic

because they are too close, gravity is much stronger than expansion of the universe at that scale

    68. cephi

QUESTION the milkdromeda will occur in around 4 and a half billion years time, and apparently they may never learn about the big bang, right? but currently, the big bang theoretically occurred 13 billion years ago, so how were *we* able to learn about it?

      1. cephi

@Mihajlo Sreckovic yeah i got that, but how come a big portion of the observable universe is just becoming out of reach in 4 billion years when we can still observe them when it's just 13 billion years old?

      2. Mihajlo Sreckovic

We see the expansion of the universe, if you reverse time, than the universe is contracting. If you keep reversing time, the whole universe is just a dot. Also, we see cosmic background radiation.

    69. Ashis Thapa

How come you always assume light speed is our only option? Compressing space using warp drives is theoretically possible. I don't see why we couldn't reach warp drive status in a 100 years if not sooner.

I disagree. If humans survive that long, there's got to be a way to travel into hyperspace, warp drive, worm holes, etc. This is how I imagine our universe will end, we get sucked into a black hole, and on the other side is a big bang. And trillions of years later, life will emerge spontaneously.

      1. Dumdumshum

If there are aliens there, yes. And there probably are aliens there.

      2. ItalianDragon

You're correct. For example in 2014 students spotted a supernova in the M82 galaxy who is about 12 million light years away. This means that, accounting for the time the light took to reach us, this supernova happened around the time the first primates started to evolve towards what would become the human race. It's also likely why we can't observe another civilization. For all we know the likelihood of other intelligent life existing is very high but is located so far away we just haven't been able to observe it, and the same goes for them. Perhaps from their point of view our solar system is still just a swirling mass of hot gas and matter.

    87. Amber pasta

Imagine going outside at night to look at the stars and you see nothing but a void that goes on for eternity..... actually sounds very sad and in a way scary but by then humans and the earth won’t be in existence since before then our sun would have swallowed us and burned the earth up

    88. Ground Zero

Sad, everything we are seeing in the night sky now happened billions of years ago. Say a million light-years away exploded at this very moment, it would take so long for the light to reach us humans will probably be long gone by then

      1. Liam Crino

Exactly! just like how a future civilization would think they are all alone in an island that is the milky way, WE might be too late to know what was before or during the big bang...
